the may vegetable garden
The vegetable garden is filled with growing plants! I'm always impressed with the miracle of planting a seed and it actually growing. Silly, but true.
With the idea of having a staggered harvest we are growing three types of potatoes: early yielding (Cobbler), mid-range yielding (Yellow Finn) and late yielding (Canela Russet).
We are growing lettuce, spinach, swiss chard and kale for salads and smoothies. The varieties are: Grandpa Admire's Lettuce, Monstrueux De Viroflay Spinach, Rocky Top Lettuce, Vulcan Swiss Chard, Perpetual Spinach Swiss Chard, Dwarf Siberian Kale
As for beans, we are growing Christmas Pole Lima Beans, Blue Lake Bush Green Beans, Missouri Wonder Pole Green Beans and Ianto's Fava Beans.
Tomatoes and Peppers? Twelve Roma plants, three cherry plants, four large tomato plants and four sweet peppers purchased from a local nursery. Grown in the same beds are two types of carrots, Little Finger Carrot and Parisienne Carrot.
Dragon's Egg Cucumber and Boston Pickling Cucumber are growing. We are trying Applegreen Eggplant again this year. The plants didn't germinate or produce well last year. We'll see about 2014.
It has been a few years since we grew gourds, they take up so much space!, but I'm excited to try and grow Bushel Basket gourds. They are large enough to use in the home as decorative storage containers, once they've been dried and cleaned. They sound intriguing. We'll also grow Birdhouse Gourd and Tambuli Gourd.
The many squash that are growing are: Zucchini Gray Squash, White Bush Scallop Squash, Early Golden Summer Crookneck Squash, Squash Golden Zucchini and Squash Zucchino Rampicante.
Herbs galore, mostly perennials, but a few we plant each year: Rosemary, Thyme, Oregano, Sage, Basil, Mint, Chamomile, Dill, Lemon Balm, Lavender, Cilantro.
Here is all the current growing goodness in pictures.
All seed varieties mentioned in this post were purchased from Baker Creek Heirloom Seed Co.
The potatoes mentioned were purchased from The Maine Potato Lady.
