Before leaving on our adventure we made reservations for a cruise on Lake Superior to tour the islands with Apostle Island Cruises. We decided on the evening grand tour. We left at 530pm and arrived back to the mainland 3 hours later. We were taken on a cruise of all the islands and given historical information, unique antecdotes and humourous rumors about each of the 22 islands. Regarding weather, it was a calm, clear day which meant we were able to go to the island furthest north, Devil's Island. It is the most picturesque and the only island where the ship is able to get close. It was quite the scenic spot and the captain lingered to allow for pictures and views.

On our adventures there is usually an association we are able to make to a book we've read. About a year or so ago we read The Spell of the White Sturgeon by Jim Kjelgaard. It gave us a glimpse into the life of fishermen on the Great Lakes (Lake Michigan, specifically) and so it was wonderful to see one of the islands with an actual fishing camp.

Since we didn't desire to make this vacation high adventure (kayaking the sea caves on Lake Superior, for example) this relaxing cruise gave us all the beautiful views without the physical exertion they sometimes require. This cruise was a great choice for our evening at the Apostle Islands.
