the july garden ~ keep on planting.

July has been a pretty great month for the garden. High temperatures, which the tomatoes love (already up to harvesting 66 pounds), steady rain, which all the plants love, and minimal pest issues (we are just starting to see Japanese beetles, squash bugs and cucumber beetles).

I planted extra flowers this year and have continued to replant them in spaces that have seen plants fulfill their life span. Once the snow peas were done, more zinnias went in, and should be in bloom soon. Once the fingerling potatoes were harvested I planted squash. Where the red potatoes were planted, I sowed cabbage for an autumn harvest. The kale has self sown so we will continue to have weekly offerings, of which I am so thankful. We could have fresh greens for 6-8 months of the year, and that is without even covering for the cold weather.

BLK's (bacon, lettuce, kale) are being eaten ~ jam is being made ~ pickles are being prepared ~ mashed potatoes, fried eggplant, sauteed green beans and salsa are being enjoyed.

July's Garden has been a sweet one, trusting I'll be able to complement August's in a similar way.
