Tanyard Creek Trail

Since we are almost a year away from our most recent hiking trip to the Buffalo National River, I thought it time to record our time there.

This trip was reminiscent of 2020 in many ways with a stop at Tanyard Creek on the drive down and revisiting the pet friendly trails of Smith Creek Preserve and Alum Cove. In addition we enjoyed the pet friendly trails of Round Top Trail, Kings Bluff and Pedastal Rocks, and it was enjoyable to see these trails in the autumn season when we had previously hiked them in the summer of 2017 - different season, different views. We gave ourselves the challenge of hiking the dry creek at Smith Creek which also gave us new views, but may have tried our patience since it seemed to take a very long time to hike out that day! Being down in the creek, though was quite beautiful, rocky - at times a challenging place to hike, but I'm glad we did it. Pedastal Rocks was also quite enjoyable this time in a new way. Having been there in the summer, one doesn't really want to explore off trail - ticks! - but being November it was fun to hike down and around into the pedastals - absolutely all the feels of being in Middle Earth.

Each hiking trip is unique. The year before was refreshingly new with all new trails and an abundance of waterfalls. This year was definitely a relaxed trip with less trails, and although a lack of running water the views were still stunning and impressive.

The past three years we have enjoyed an autumn trip to the BNR and in the past seven years we have hiked there six times. What began as a simple exploratory trip in 2015 to see a few trails at the BNR has turned into a good, recurring habit. I am sure we won't be able to stay away for too long.
