the august 2022 garden.

unruly beauty - that describes the august garden to me. some plants have stopped producing and are dying; others are just beginning to give their fruit.

there has been an increase in harvest - over 100 pounds this month! - but most noteably is the lack of tomatoes thanks to our unprecedented dry weather. usually this time of year we are totalling close to 200 pounds of tomatoes, where this year we are jus shy of 50. the cucumbers were more than happy to grow, however, and we have a record number of pounds from those plants. this is our second year growing butternut squash and having decided to grow them in a location with more sun coupled with being diligent to stymie the squash bugs it looks like we'll have quite the harvest.  the final potatoes need to be dug up as well as the all the carrots. late summer green bean plants are about ready to give. peppers, tomatoes, kale and herbs will continue through early october for sure. the intense gardending season is winding down, but it's nice to still enjoy fresh vegetables for a number of more weeks.

still in bloom! zinnias, black-eyed susan, cosmos, sunflowers, calendula, althea, gaura, vitex, hollyhock, morning glory, black-eyed susan vine, clematis.

we also actually decided to yet again expand the vegetable garden this month. Eight wooden raised beds were made and next month's post will include those pictures.
