the september 2022 garden.

Wow! September provided much harvest, particularly with squash, carrots, peppers and green beans. The squash were planted "late." We decided to plant them after returning from a long trip in June, then with the record heat temperatures it was a while before they really began to grow in late July and through August. Our care for these plants has been rewarded with a record harvest ~ 67 pounds ~ and we could add a few more to that.

We've also been grateful for a steady stream of tomatoes and greens ~ kale, swiss chard, cabbage. The tomatoes will not be record numbers {we've harvest more squash in pounds than tomatoes ~ unheard of for us}. I take comfort that the struggles to grow this vegetable were not confined to our humble garden, but we've read that the entire tomato industry struggled this year.  The butternut squash has been exceptionally prolific ~ so much is in the freezer, and we've already enjoyed soup and muffins ~ that is one impressively tasty vegetable.

October should see us harvest the final carrots, tomatoes, greens, herbs and sweet potatoes while enjoying the final stunning blooms {and gathering their seed for next year}.
