the august garden.

This August was no different than any other - it brought the heat. I lost count of how many days we reached 100 or more degrees. Even so, many vegetables are happy to continue growing - squash, sweet potatoes, tomatillos, green beans, carrots. Diligent watering means we still have flowers in bloom, but some plants are just done. Thankfully, our tomato harvest had been abundant up to this point so even with those plants basically burning it is not much of a loss except for continued fresh eating. This has been our most productive year for vegetable gardening, and since I did have that as a goal it's nice to meet it. To have such an abundance of staples - tomatoes, potatoes, garlic, onions, herbs, greens, green beans - really does make the responsiblity of food preparation in the home a delight in a unique way. I do believe eating well is healthy in so many ways - on the pocket book, body and mind just to name a few. September will be a full month with beginning garden clean-up and continuing to harvest sweet potatoes, green beans, squash, beans and carrots. The cooler temperatures and autumn season will be welcome.
