In June of 2022 we traveled seven states in three days on the first leg of our family vacation to celebrate the high school graduation of our daughter. When asked where she'd like to go Ella suggested the forest and the ocean, so we gave her both with beaches and forests of California. Of course, a road trip allows you to see so much more than the destination. On the way to California it was frisbee at almost every rest stop. We saw the beauty of Iowa and Nebraska, spent a quiet evening in Cheyenne, navigated a blizzard on our way out of Wyoming, enjoyed the Great Salt Lake at lunchtime, were awed by the Salt Flats, surprised by the beauty of northern Nevada, and really glad to finally arrive at our destination of Arcata after driving Highway 299 across northern California. Stunning beauty, all of it. As I look back on the pictures and think on how long  we were away, I consider that we could have done so much more and seen so much more, but what jumps out most is the beauty we enjoyed and that we were mostly chill and relaxed as we spent our days - no rushing to see everything, experience everything. Just a simple agenda and able to enjoy the time together. We spent four full days in California with Arcata as our home base from which to explore the Redwoods, the beaches, the towns, and then it was time to return to Missouri via a southern route through Nevada - Utah - Colorado - Kansas to complete our loop.
