September is the month where sometimes I forget there are still vegetables growing in the garden. The need to tend the ground is negligible and watering is quite sparse. Has it not rained for days and days? Oh well, the garden is on it's way out anyway. So anything we continue to harvest in September is not necessarily due to my attentiveness.
The squash beetles put forth a good effort, and mostly won, but we eeked out over 30 pounds of the wonderful butternut squash and might bring in a few more. The tomatoes were cleared in August, but the tomatillos (which I prefer for salsa now anyway) continued on, and gave us a record year.
So, many, potatoes! A record year there as well. We are enjoying fresh eating, but also have many parboiled bags in the freezer ~ a healthy, convenience food.
Ground cherry crisps have been a hit. And the gift of almost 50 pounds of farm fresh apples will see us enjoying crisps, pies, applesauce and more throughout fall and winter. We gave up growing fruit trees years ago, so these apples are a nice addition to what we grow ourselves...and apple pie is an absolute favorite around here.
Kale is still trying to grow despite the cabbage moths, a few final carrots need to be pulled, basil can still be harvested ~ but the 2025 garden is on it's last legs. Cosmos seeds planted in the heat of July are making for a beautiful finale ~ and the roses are still wowing us, thanks to frequent dead heading.
What will the 2026 garden have in store? That plan will come from scheming and dreaming through the cold weather months as I forget all the physical labor this little oasis of productivity actually requires.😏
